Display caption This plate first appeared in part V of Finden's ' Landscape Illustrations'. Turner's elaborate conception was based on a drawing made in Athens by the architect Thomas Allason. Colour studies also displayed show how he began to develop the design. Byron had lived in Athens in 1810.
