(BRICS Soil Micro-Food Web,
(Background)
Soil food web, as a belowground biotic network formed by trophic interaction, plays key roles in underpinning ecosystem functions such as carbon and nitrogen cycling and in delivering ecosystem services including food security and climate mitigation. As the primary decomposers, microorganisms dominantly contribute to organic matter decomposition. Also, soil microfauna mainly including protozoa and nematodes make the crucial contribution, due to their close associations with microorganisms by direct predation. More importantly, the nematode community analysis has been extensively used to indicate the entire soil food web status, because it is greatly abundant, species-rich, multi-trophic and occupies the central position within soil food web. Therefore, soil micro-food web consisting of microorganisms-protozoa-nematodes has received growing attention.

During the 2022 BRICS conference, the five BRICS countries of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa have together focused on sustainable agriculture. As mentioned above, soil micro-food web is important for sustaining agriculture. This special issue specially focusing on the latest advances in soil micro-food web in BRICS countries aims to promote scholarly communications among the BRICS countries and to share the relevant research achievements with the world. This will be significant for informing soil micro-food web management for sustainable agriculture.
